JOHN M. SMITH, farmer, P. O. New Riegel, was born February 14, 1824, son of Conrad and Elizabeth Smith, natives of Germany, where they married and remained until 1834, then immigrated to America, coming to Seneca County, Ohio, where they resided the balance of their lives. Conrad Smith died in 1880, his wife in 1870. Our subject was married, October 21, 1847, to Catharine Sauter, born in Bavaria, Germany, June 22, 1830, daughter of Philip A. and Barbara Sauter, both of whom died in Seneca County, Ohio. To Mr. and Mrs. Smith were corn twelve children, nine living: Conrad, Henry C., John W., Frank B., Charles D., Rosella, William H., Albert F. and Edward F., and three deceased: George W., Christens and Anna C. Our subject is a brick and stone mason by trade, but has been engaged in farming since 1843. He owns 200 acres, mostly improved land. He and his family are members of the Lutheran Church. Mrs. Smith departed this life, January 3, 1872; she was a loving wife, a kind mother, and her loss was mourned by all who knew her.
