JOSEPH McNITT, of Thompson Township, Seneca County, Ohio, was born in Cayuga County, New York, on the 13th of October, 1815. At the age of nineteen he removed with his parents to Seneca County, and settled a farm situated about one and a half miles west of the Catholic Church, in Thompson Township. On the 28th of September 1837, Mr. McNitt married Marietta Whitney, by whom he had one son, still living. The latter resides in the Township, and is married. Mr. McNitt sustained the misfortune of losing his wife, who died on the18th of April, 1846. He married a second time, to Achsah Sloat, a resident of Melmore, Seneca County, Ohio. This marriage has been blessed with five children, three of whom, two sons and a daughter, are still living. The other two, a son and a daughter, died young. Mr. McNitt now resides on the farm which he first purchased, and which contains one hundred and twenty acres under excellent cultivation. The residence is beautifully situated, and has an air of rural comfort which is rarely seen except in thriving agricultural localities. The outbuildings are substantial and convenient: in fine, every surrounding denotes that the owner possesses a competence, and takes the most healthful, and at the same time most pleasurable way of enjoying the fruits of his industry and economy.
