JAMES W. LAWHEAD, farmer, P. O Adrian, was born in Franklin County, Penn., January 10, 1822, son of James
and Jane Lawhead, also natives of Pennsylvania, where they remained until the former's death, which occurred in
1832. The widow and her five children subsequently accompanied her father to Adams County, Penn., where they
remained until the spring of 1845, when our subject, who was then twenty-three years of age, and the eldest of the
family, brought his mother, three sisters and one brother to Big Spring Township, this county, and settled on the
farm where he and his family now reside. His mother departed this life in 1878. James W. Lawhead was united in
marriage, the first time, November 11, 1847, with Maria Frederick, born in Ohio in 1824, daughter of Jacob and
Elizabeth Frederick (both now deceased), and to this union was born one child, William H., married and now
residing in Wood County, Ohio. Mrs. Lawhead dying January 1, 1848. Mr. Lawhead then married, November 22,
1850, Catherine Dievly, born in Stark County, Ohio, in 1826, daughter of Henry and Barbara Dievly (both
deceased), and by this union are seven children, four of whom are now living: Mary J., Lewis, Sarah E. and Jacob
E. Our subject owns 288 acres of improved land, and for a number of years was engaged in buying and selling
stock. He served as county coroner one term.

BIG SPRING TOWNSHIP

J. W. LAWHEAD, of Big Spring Township, Seneca County, Ohio, was born in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, on the 10th of January,1822. He moved on to the farm he at present occupies in the spring of 1846, and has resided there ever since that date. On the 14th of October, 1846, be married Maria Frederick, a native of Seneca County, by whom he had one son, who is married, and now resides in Wood County, Ohio, on a farm of one hundred and forty acres, owned by the subject of this sketch. On the 1st of January, 1847, Mrs. Lawhead died, and on the 27th of October, 1849, Mr. Lawhead married again, to Catharine Deibley. This second marriage has been blessed with four sons and four daughters,-two of each dying young; the remainder are still residing with their parents. The homestead farm contains one hundred and forty acres, with fine and comfortable residence, good orchard, and substantial out-buildings, and is situated one mile east of Adrian. Besides which Mr. Lawhead possesses a farm of sixty acres located in Crawford Township, Wyandot County, Ohio. Mr. Lawhead was elected to the office of Coroner, and served the County faithfully in that capacity. He has also been elected to several municipal offices, all of which he has filled with marked honesty and ability. Mr. Lawhead is a gentleman who enjoys the respect of all who know him, and is an intelligent and upright citizen, and one who takes a commendable pride in the prosperity of his Township and County.
